Game Recap: Cloverdale splits back to back games against Mission City to conclude a busy October

CLOVERDALE, BC.

The Cloverdale Hockey Club returned back to Cloverdale Arena on Thursday night, a week after suffering their first loss of the season, a 6-4 defeat against the Abbotsford Pilots.

Thursday night's game saw Cloverdale host the Mission City Outlaws, a team which they have not seen since their final regular season meeting in the 2025-26 regular season. The two teams also met on the night of Halloween in Mission City, but first, let's look back at Cloverdale's most recent home game.

The opening twenty minutes were fairly even as both teams began to learn each other's playing styles. Saajan Gill opened the scoring for Mission City with his 7th goal of the season at the 6:50 mark. The scoring chances were limited on both sides as the rest of the period went without another goal, and shots on goal after the 1st period were 13-12 for the Outlaws.

After a rather defensive 1st period, the rest of the game saw plenty of goals and action from both teams. Matteo Galasso notched his 6th goal of the season on a powerplay three minutes into the 2nd to get Cloverdale on the board. About thirty seconds later, Callum Rennie battled his way in front before scoring to give Cloverdale their first lead of the night.

The Outlaws responded very quickly, as Ryder Buick scored his first PJHL goal just eight seconds later. Both teams remained fairly disciplined in this period, and each team had its fair share of scoring chances. Cloverdale got close to re-gaining the lead, but it was Outlaws who would strike with two goals in the next seven minutes. Noah Allen and James Raffan gave the Outlaws a 4-2 lead after the 2nd period, with shots on goal 17-15 in the middle frame.

Cloverdale wasn't out of this game yet, and the third period started just the way they wanted. Breyen Basigin made it a 4-3 lead just 44 seconds into the final frame. Keenan Connor tied the game at four on a powerplay five minutes later, and Calvin Bright gave Cloverdale their second lead of the night 16 seconds later.

Once Cloverdale re-gained the lead, they kept the momentum going, as Ashton Holbech scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season 48 seconds later. Saajan Gill gave the Outlaws some hope with his 2nd goal of the night three minutes later, but Ashton Holbech responded two minutes later with his 2nd goal of the night to make it a 7-5 game.

Cole Domonkos scored his 1st goal of the season on a powerplay with a minute remaining to secure the win for Cloverdale. Final shots on goal were 46-36 for Cloverdale, and Ashton Holbech was the 1st star of the game with 2 goals and 2 assists in Cloverdale's 8-5 win. The six goal third period got Cloverdale back in the win column, and they would now look to carry that momentum into a Saturday night rematch against the Outlaws in Mission City.

Cloverdale and Mission City both went with different goaltenders (compared to who they had in net on Thursday) on Saturday night, as Saihaj Nijjar and Justin Goetz got the start in goal. It was an unfortunate start to the game for Cloverdale, as Mission City took a 2-0 lead after five minutes thanks to goals from Ethan Raymond and Noah Allen.

Cloverdale responded with some scoring chances later in the 1st period, but were unable to get on the board. Alfie DeBruyn extended the Outlaws lead to three with a powerplay goal with 33 seconds left in the opening period. Shots on goal after the 1st were 11-8 for Cloverdale, and Saihaj Nijjar was replaced by Carter Greenway in the Cloverdale net to start the 2nd period.

Lachlan Roth got Cloverdale back in this game with his 5th goal of the season just a minute into the 2nd period. Cloverdale continued to show good resilience despite trailing, but Brayden McEachern made it 4-1 for the Outlaws five minutes later. Once again Cloverdale was able to respond quickly, as Callum Rennie and Matthew Shehyn scored two minutes apart to make this a 4-3 game with 30 minutes to go.

Cloverdale battled for the equalizer in the 3rd, outshooting the Outlaws 16-8 in the final period. Jaxson MacDonald gave the Outlaws a 5-3 lead with 12 minutes to play, and Matthew Shehyn reponded with his second goal of the game two minutes later. Cloverdale had a strong final push in this game, but Justin Goetz stood tall in net to secure the victory for the Outlaws 5-4. Final shots on goal were 42-25 for Cloverdale, who did well to get back in this game after going down 3-0 before the first intermission.
